183rd Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana
For the past several months the diocesan staff have been preparing for our 2020 Diocesan Convention. This happening is not unusual this time of year but due to COVID-19 our Convention will be unlike any we have seen before. Because gathering in large groups has the potential to pass the virus from one individual to another, we are taking precautions to eliminate spreading germs from one church to another. Thus, we will be Zooming our time together.
The theme for this year’s convention is “The Moral Voice of the Church” and the keynote speaker will be the former Presiding Bishop, the Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori. I am excited about her addressing issues that will help us lift our moral voices in this contentious time.
Below are some very important messages that you need to know before Convention. Please read them carefully.
The 2020 Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana will take place Saturday, October 24th at 10:00 am via Zoom. Login instructions will be sent to delegates prior to our gathering. Delegations will be asked to meet at their churches and login to Zoom as a group. For example, if your delegation has four people you may be able to gather around one screen in your parish hall. It will be up to each congregation to provide an adequate setup that ensures full delegate participation and appropriate physical distancing. That being said, some delegates may prefer to participate from their homes and that will also be allowable.
Later this week, your congregation will be sent (via email and physical mail) a delegate/clergy registration form. Please complete this form and return it to the Diocesan Office at your earliest convenience. The deadline for delegate/clergy registration is September 24th. There is no cost to attend.
If you are non-parochial or retired clergy, please visit www.edola.org/convention-forms to fill out your registration.
Our Convention will begin at 10:00 am with the Holy Eucharist, which will include the Bishop’s Address to the Diocese. Delegations will view this service via Zoom. Our business session will commence immediately following the Eucharist and will focus on voting to fill elected offices and passing a budget.
Every delegate will need access to their own smartphone, tablet or computer in order to take part in online voting.
Nominations for Elected Positions
The nomination form can be found here: www.edola.org/convention-nominations. Completed nomination forms are due by September 24th.
PRE-CONVENTION MEETINGS & DELEGATION “CAPTAINS”
Two Pre-Convention meetings (also via Zoom) will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 pm and Tuesday, October 13 at 6:00 pm. The October 6th meeting will focus on diocesan ministries and will feature time to engage in Q&A with Bishop Thompson. The October 13th meeting will serve as our budget hearing. Proposed amendments to the Diocesan Budget should be presented at this hearing.
All delegates are invited to attend both of these meetings. However, each congregation will be required to appoint a “Delegation Captain” that will attend at least one of these Pre-Convention meetings. During each Pre-Convention meeting, we will walk through Convention procedures, practice electronic voting and attempt to iron out technological difficulties anyone may experience.
Over the past few years, our Conventions have included formation opportunities. A video of Bishop Jefferts Schori’s keynote presentation, along with other formation presentations, will be uploaded to the “Diocesan Convention” page of our website for you to view at your convenience.
So much has changed over the past months and, quite frankly, much may change by late October. That being said, we will continue to do our best to be nimble and to respond to the needs of the time. See Less
