Gaudet Scholarships

Purpose

The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, through the Gaudet Scholarship Program, provides scholarships to advance the education of African American and BIPOC students attending Episcopal primary and secondary schools under the diocese.

Beginning in the 2017–2018 school year, the Gaudet Fund shifted to a block grant model, in which Episcopal schools apply for funding on behalf of their students. This approach continues today, as schools are best positioned to understand their families’ circumstances and steward these resources with care.

In recent years, we have strengthened this model through an equity-centered framework that guides the distribution of funds. While schools continue to submit applications and supporting information, awards are informed by shared criteria, including household income, tuition burden, and a tiered approach to financial need.

Gaudet scholarships are intended to do more than fill financial gaps—they are designed to reduce tuition burden to a sustainable level for families, particularly those with the greatest need. Through this model, we prioritize deeper support for students whose ability to attend and remain in school would otherwise be at risk.

This approach reflects our commitment to stewarding the Gaudet Fund in a way that not only supports access but also meaningfully removes barriers to education and advances Beloved Community.

Scholarship Guidelines

Frances Joseph Gaudet scholarships support the education of African American and BIPOC students attending Episcopal primary and secondary schools within the Diocese of Louisiana.

Funds are distributed through a block grant model, meaning schools apply on behalf of their students. Schools remain best positioned to understand their families’ needs and partner in stewarding these resources with care.

The Gaudet Scholarship Block operates within an equity-centered framework, which guides how funds are awarded. This includes consideration of:

  • Household income (up to $100,000)
  • Tuition burden (minimum 15%)
  • A tiered approach to prioritizing financial need

This model is designed to reduce tuition burden to a sustainable level, prioritizing students whose ability to attend and remain in school would otherwise be at risk.
