Poetry Reading Celebrating Louisiana’s Immigrants and Refugees

Deacon Charles deGravelles will be joining other writers and musicians at a Poetry Reading Celebrating Louisiana’s Immigrants and Refugees on Saturday, October 3, 10 am to noon at the East Baton Rouge Public Library–Goodwood Branch.

The event, jointly sponsored by the Poetry Society of Louisiana and the Louisiana Organization of Refugees and Immigrants, is free and open to the public.

“So many of us have felt helpless as we’ve watched the often unfair treatment of our immigrant friends and neighbors,” deGravelles said. “The reading is a wonderful way we can come together to celebrate these wonderful people by honoring their cultures and heritage, and by giving voice to their struggles and sacrifices.”

The reading will include work by Louisiana poets, student poets, and immigrant storytellers describing their often perilous journeys to get to the United States and their experiences on their way to becoming citizens.
