The R. Rev. Andrew M.L. Dietsche writes about the calling of Rt. Rev. Clifton “Dan” Daniel III as 10th dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine after his service as interim dean:
In the Spring of 2017 the Right Reverend Clifton “Dan” Daniel III began service as the Interim Dean of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, following the resignation of Dean James Kowalski after fifteen years of faithful service to this great church and institution. The months since have been simply transformational in the life and mission of our cathedral.
While understanding that Dean Daniel’s leadership of our cathedral will by intention and necessity be short-term, the Board of Trustees and I have come to recognize that the good work of this first year of his deanship has been a remarkably important time in the life and culture of the cathedral and diocese. And with important transitional work still to be done, we have been moved to consider the blessings and rewards which will redound to the cathedral and diocese by a continuation of his cathedral leadership for a time.
Therefore, at the regularly held meeting of the Board of Cathedral Trustees on June 12, the Interim Dean was enthusiastically elected to be the 10th Dean of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. It is our expectation that he will serve in this capacity for three to four years. I am personally grateful for the opportunity to continue to partner with my dear friend and colleague in the leadership of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine for a longer period.
