DESCRIPTION:EDOLA invites you to join a pilgrimage to Jackson\, Mississippi—a city that stood at the heart of both the Jim Crow South and the Civil Rights Movement. Together\, we’ll journey through our shared history and reflect on what it means for us today as citizens and children of God. \nOur pilgrimage includes visits to the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. We’ll also be welcomed into courageous conversations by the faithful community at St. James Episcopal Church\, the home church of our own Bishop Duckworth! \nThis isn’t just about looking back—it’s about understanding how the past shapes us now and discerning how we can move forward in faith\, justice\, and love.  \nRegister HERE \nCost: $75/person – includes transportation\, dinner on Friday evening\, full programming \nMuseum: Two Mississippi Museums. \nTransportation — Charter Bus\, leaving from TWO locations:\nNorthshore – St. Michael’s\, Mandeville\nNOLA – Diocesan Office \nHotel: Homewood Suites\, Fondren – We have a room block for our group but you must book on your own.  \nMeals: Breakfast included with hotel. Lunch on your own. We suggest packing a lunch for Friday. There is a cafe on-site of the museum. Produced by National Geographic Documentary Films\,\nthe film examines the history and legacy of an Indian residential school\, bringing to light the\nforced separation\, assimilation\, and abuse experienced by Indigenous children at the hands of\nChurch and government\, while also honoring the resilience of Native communities.\nWe offer this screening as a way to reflect on the history of Indigenous peoples in our country\nand to consider how those histories continue to shape our shared life today\, inviting us toward\ngreater understanding\, peace\, and dignity for all. \nThis screening is hosted by St. Margaret’s Beloved Community Ministry. \nViewer discretion is advised for Sugarcane\nThis documentary details the historical and ongoing abuse within Canadian Indian residential schools\, specifically focusing on the St. Joseph’s Mission in British Columbia. \nThis film is rated R. \n\nThe 2024 documentary Sugarcane examines the history of abuse at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia\, presenting deeply disturbing firsthand testimony and evidence of widespread physical\, psychological\, and systemic violence. \nThe film includes explicit discussion and survivor accounts related to the following: \n\n\nAbuse and violence: The content includes direct testimony and discussion of profound abuse inflicted on children\, both physical and sexual. \n\n\nInfanticide: Evidence and survivor testimony indicating that infants born to young Indigenous girls at the school were killed\, including accounts involving incineration. \n\n\nPhysical abuse: Descriptions of severe and repeated violence inflicted on children by mission staff. \n\n\nSystemic and colonial violence: Exploration of the forced removal of children from their families and the deliberate erasure of Indigenous culture and language. \n\n\nIntergenerational trauma: Depictions of the enduring effects of these abuses across generations\, including addiction and suicide. \n\n\nPsychological violence: The profound trauma associated with missing children\, unmarked graves\, and the long-term suppression of memory and truth.
