SUMMARY:Julibee on the Point -- A Medical Debt Relief Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Mount Olivet has partnered with the famous Old Point Bar to host a wonderful Benefit Concert “Jubilee on the Point” on March 21\, 2026 from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. featuring the Monkey Hill Band and our own Fr. Ron Clingenpeel with his band\, Fr. Ron and Friends (https://www.wwoz.org/blog/1202686). The public is invited and there is no cover charge\, they are just asking for your generous donations. \n“This Advent past we were reminded that gratitude isn’t just a feeling — it’s an action\,” said\nFr. Bill. “When we see families in our community struggling with medical bills they never\nasked for\, we have an opportunity to turn our thankfulness into tangible relief for our neighbors.” \nRead Full Press Release HERE. \nAbout the Project:\nMount Olivet Episcopal Church took a remarkable step to help their community by launching their JUBILEE\nMedical Debt Relief Project\, asking donors to become “Jubilee Givers” by lifting the\nburden of medical debt from their neighbors. Partnering with national nonprofit Undue\nMedical Debt\, the church goal is to raise more than $15\,000 for those in need in the metro\narea. This translates into about $1.5 million in relief! \nTo donate to the Jubilee Medical Debt Relief Project or learn more\, visit:\nhttps://unduemedicaldebt.org/campaign/mount-olivet-jubilee-medical-debt-relief-campaign/ \nNationally\, more than 100 million people are burdened by medical debt to the tune of $220 billion. This includes about 1 in every 5 people in Louisiana. The average person with medical debt in collections in the state carries a balance of over $1\,560. \n“This little historic church has always had a big heart and is already doing a lot for the Algiers Point community. But that wasn’t enough. Our church means to be a force for helpful change. Medical impoverishment is becoming more common place. We had to do something to fulfill the truth in action of our faith. Our faith teaches that\, ‘…faith without works is dead.’ We are alive!” remarked Fr. Bill “And so we launched this\, Jubilee Project.” \nMedical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcies in the US. People with medical debt are also three times more likely to experience mental health burdens like anxiety or depression and significantly more likely to skip or delay mental healthcare. \nUndue Medical Debt is a national nonprofit that acquires medical debt belonging to those least able to pay in large\, bundled portfolios for pennies on the dollar\, while also shining a light on the broken system that creates medical debt. On average\, one dollar donated to Undue erases $100 of medical debt. \nFr. Terry estimates that approximately 1\,500 Metro area residents will receive medical debt relief through this initiative if the fundraising goal is met. There will be a follow up announcement when debt relief letters are being sent to community members. \nTo learn more or to donate\, https://unduemedicaldebt.org/campaign/mount-olivet-jubilee-medical-debt-relief-campaign/.
