Petition Process

Our Petition Process concluded on Friday, April 8, and no additional applications for bishop were received. The Standing Committee is therefore pleased to announce that our slate for bishop is complete and includes the two candidates  presented on April 1:

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Louisiana announces that the Petition Process for the next Bishop of Louisiana will be open from Friday, April 1, 2022 (the day that the Slate of Candidates is announced) through Friday, April 8, 2022. The Petition Process is the means by which a qualified person, who is not currently part of the Slate, can be nominated for inclusion on the Slate of Candidates. Note: The Petition Process replaced “nominations from the floor” about 25 years ago.

A qualified person is any priest or bishop in good standing of the Episcopal Church who:

  • has obtained the age of 30 years
  • has been ordained a minimum of seven (7) years
  • if recovering from an addiction, has had ten (10) years of continuous sobriety and is actively working a program of recovery

No candidate will be excluded because of sex, race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or disabilities.

A Petition Process candidate must be nominated by:

  • a primary nominator
  • a Bishop nominator
  • three lay co-nominators from three parishes and representing at least two Deaneries
  • three clergy co-nominators from three parishes and representing at least two Deaneries

Nominator, nominee, and co-nominators may sign separate nomination forms which may then be submitted as part of the package by the nominee. The nominee must give consent to be considered as a candidate on the nomination form.

The completed Petition Process application package should include:

  • Cover letter
  • Petition Process Nomination Form(s) including consent and release
  • Application form including:
    • Full name
    • Social Security Number
    • Driver’s License Number /State ID Number and State of Issue
    • Name of Spouse /Partner (if applicable)
    • Address of Self/Spouse or Partner for last 10 years
    • Employment history for Self/Spouse or Partner for last 10 years
    • Name and ages of children (if applicable)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of current Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) portfolio (downloaded)
  • Names and contact information (phone and e-mail) for all bishops under whom nominee has served
  • Names and contact information (phone and e-mail) for references of those with whom
    nominee is serving (Wardens, clergy, staff, organist, Stewardship and other program
  • Recommendation letters from one clergy, one lay person, and one long-time friend or
    colleague not connected with The Episcopal Church
  • Answers to the following questions used in the Search Process:
    • What has led you to respond to this petition process for nomination to be the 12th
      Bishop of Louisiana?
    • Describe your passion for mission and ministry.
    • One of the challenges that our denomination faces is an aging population. What
      are your ideas for motivating the next generation of clergy leaders?
    • Almost two years have been spent in struggles with the COVID pandemic and the
      many social, political, and economic challenges it brought to the forefront. How
      have you fostered unity among individuals of differing values and diverse
      opinions? Where do you see hope springing forward in The Episcopal Church?

The completed Petition package must be delivered by 5:00 p.m. on April 8, 2022 via e-mail in
pdf format to the President of the Standing Committee, The Rev. John Sloan Miller at
