Purpose
The Diocese of Louisiana offers a dynamic, interactive approach to the affirmation and development of the ministry of baptized adults. Through lecture, small group work, worship, and individual reflection, the School provides its participants with a foundation in Scripture and other areas of study to equip its graduates to demonstrate leadership in servant ministry.
Structure
Effective with the school year beginning January, 2008, the School for Ministry is offering two tracks of study:
- Formation- two nine month periods of information and skills development, and
- Resource- short term instruction in specialized areas of ministry for the ordained and the laity.
Options for the Formation Track
The formation track will be available in two plans:
- Diploma- full participation for both years with successful completion of a paper and a verbal presentation at the end of the second year. This option is required for those in preparation for the diaconate.
- Audit- attendance at classes on one or more subjects of interest. Participation in worship is encouraged. Participation in small groups is optional.
Content
The core curriculum (first year) is the following:
- Scripture with five weekends studying the Old and New Testament thematically.
- The Church in History ~ two weekends
- Worship and Liturgy ~ two weekends
The second year begins with a reflective weekend on personal prayers and spirituality entitled Teach Me to Listen followed by:
- Theology ~ two weekends
- Ethics and Moral Theology ~ two weekends
- Polity and Issues in the Anglican Communion ~ one Weekend
- The Church and Social Justice ~ one weekend
- Leadership in Servant Ministry ~ two weekend

The first year of the formation track will be held Jan. 11/ 12, Feb. 8/9, March 7/8, April 11/12, May 9/10, Sept. 12/13, Oct. 10/11, Nov. 7/8, Dec. 12/13
Schedule
The nine hours of class work each weekend begins with worship at 7 PM on Friday evening and ends at 3 PM on Saturday afternoon.
Location
The 2008 school year will be held at Christ Church Cathedral at 2919 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans. Consideration is being given to holding the second year on the North Shore or in Baton Rouge.
Expense for Participants
The tuition for the formation curriculum is $350 each year. About $200 a year should be allowed for text books. Friday night lodging and evening meal is the participant’s responsibility. Over night accommodation in individual homes is available.
The cost to audit has not been finalized.

May Assignment:
The last class before the summer break is May 9 and 10. Read the sections of the text book assigned in the New Testament second outline.
Two papers are due by the May class. Subjects follow:
First paper
Choose one of the major themes (p.17 of notes) and develop it as if it would apply to the world today.
Compare the suffering Jesus was to experience with those that Job experienced.
Psalm is frequently used at funerals. Why? Explain.
Second paper
In studying the gospels and Paul, begin to develop a portrait of Jesus. First, what do the Scriptures actually say about him and second what can be said about his “personality”?
