Bishop Applauds Extension of FEMA Funds Until June
by Staff
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced federal funding for Case Management services through the Katrina Aid Today network would be extended through June 1, 2008 throughout the Gulf Coast. Funding was originally scheduled to end March 31, 2008.
Thanks to a network of church leaders, politicians and concerned citizens making their voices heard in Washington, funding has been extended for eight weeks. After the eight-week period Case Management funds will be managed by individual state agencies.
“This is a major accomplishment,” explained the Rt. Rev. Charles Jenkins, Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana, of the funding extension. “It shows how much we can do when we work together. We have forged partnerships in New Orleans since Katrina with other churches and faith based organizations and I think this shows that together we are stronger.”
Churches and other faith-based organizations operating in New Orleans since Katrina were further encouraged that FEMA recognized three main issues of continuing concern: (1) Case Management services must continue for Katrina/Rita victims, (2) the Federal Government will take responsibility to pay for these services, and (3) “qualified private organizations” include non-profits and faith-based organizations.
“We are grateful that our strong partners, such as the Episcopal Church, along the Gulf Coast will have access to federal funds through the next year to continue Case Management programs,” said Jim Cox, Executive Director of Katrina Aid Today. “Although Katrina Aid Today will phase out, the good work of the network of partners will continue.”
The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana is committed to working with our partners long after the June 1 deadline to help facilitate displaced families return home to safe, affordable housing and neighborhoods.
“We stand for the right of all people to return to their home city of New Orleans for a safe and sustainable life,” said Bishop Jenkins.
