President Bush Honors Elysian Trumpet

by Heather Parker

On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, Christ Church Cathedral artist-in-residence Irvin Mayfield performed for President Bush at the North American Summit in New Orleans which was attended by Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

At the event, President Bush presented Mayfield with the following letter designating the Elysian Trumpet a “Cultural Treasure”:

To the people of New Orleans:

The Elysian Trumpet heralds the triumphant rebirth of the Crescent City.  Created to represent the rich heritage of New Orleans, the trumpet celebrates the legendary giants of jazz and honors the unifying power of a genre that only American could have produced.  This cultural treasure symbolizes the bold spirit of a determined and resilient people and is dedicated to all the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Laura and I send our prayers and best wishes.  May God bless you, and may God Bless America.

Signed

George W. Bush
